On the occasion of the 3rd year of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Beate Passow presents her monumental tapestry Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the series Monkey Business at the EIKON Schauraum. The artist, who weaves together contemporary, historical and political events – in this case, quite literally – depicts Russian President Vladimir Putin in no fewer than four roles: as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he brings death, famine, disease and war.
“Shortly after the project began, Beate Passow conceived the tapestry, which, like the other works in the series, is composed of a multitude of photographs. In this way, a specific event is symbolically heightened, imbued with an almost uncanny quality, yet appears all the more real and dramatic thanks to the black-and-white photographic aesthetic.” (Wolfgang Ullrich, EIKON #129)
