Markus Guschelbauer – SMBOLS & SIGNS
The theme of landscape and its representation in the visual arts as well as the theoretical discourse on nature, form the main concerns in Markus Guschelbauer’s artistic practice. In his photographs, Guschelbauer places man-made objects – mostly simple graphic elements or geometric shapes – within natural landscapes, thereby creating a moment of abstraction and disorientation in our perception of the environment. The basic forms in the resulting photographs mirror the monochrome centre, thus becoming signs in their own right that oscillate between index, icon and symbol. Arranged in a series, the photographs merge into a complex system of signs and explore questions of landscape, identity and the appropriation of nature. A comprehensive feature is dedicated to the artist in EIKON #113.
