His pictures make us believe that architecture is inhabitable only after considerable adaptations; and contrary to the new photographic efforts towards immersive composition, they by no means leave the viewer’s usual mode of engagement untouched: in light of them we marvel at the world in which so much shimmers, without offering us protection or clear access. His emphasis on the surface is a relic of Modernism, but it also allows us to critique how little of the current use of our cities and their outskirts permit us to inhabit them with a certain grace or a vital aspiration.
