Lorenz Estermann’s works on paper, with their collage-like style, are reminiscent, amongst other things, of Franz West’s collages. Differently to West, however, the painter Estermann, who has gained recognition in the Austrian art scene since the 1990s for his abstract compositions, remains clearly discernible in these interventions. He covers parts of a background landscape with a solid expanse of colour, adding seemingly random words such as ‘packet’, ‘perkal’, ‘please’ or ‘reef’, whose typography oscillates between hand-painted signs and graffiti.
