The scene is being filmed outdoors, at night. The setting is just right, the lighting is in place. – But what happens on the periphery, where the light of the scene fades and the outside world takes over? Patrick Topitschnig has been working with Light Overflow on numerous film sets in Austria and internationally since 2019. His photographic series captures what the film camera chooses not to see; his images reveal those almost dark zones that are merely brushed by the film lighting.

“For me, ‘EXT.NOC.’ is an observation at the fringes of the constructed film world. Where filmmaking meets the real world. Diegetic and extradiegetic sequences of images converge on the same timeline. I draw formally on cinematic narrative strategies and utilise them for my own independent photographic composition,” says Topitschnig.
