Since 1997, Riitta Päiväläinen (Helsinki) has been working on site-specific photography projects involving fabric installations in natural environments. Through her visual language, she creates delicate, ephemeral interventions in remote, unspoilt places that appear to have been spared from human activity. The forests, lakes and moors of her homeland shape her visual language just as much as the memory of a childhood in which the landscape was experienced as a living world, filled with imaginary creatures and stories.
In her works, nature appears less as a geographical location than as an emotional and psychological space, a resonant field for the imagination, perception and inner images.
