“Engaging with photography – and, by extension, with media art – is so enriching because its unique appeal gives rise to a freedom that is mysterious and provocative, subtle and political, experimental, opulent or radically minimalist, thereby constantly opening up new ways in which we see, feel and understand the world.”

Institute for Photography and Media Art
Since 1991, EIKON has been a key platform for contemporary photography and media art.
As an internationally networked magazine, online platform and exhibition space in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, we combine artistic practice and theoretical discourse with curated education and presentation. Our mission is to promote, document and reflect on contemporary visual productions and forms of media expression. In doing so, we create space for critical engagement, new perspectives and the long-term visibility of artistic positions.
Connection
Based in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, we are firmly rooted in one of Europe’s most important cultural hubs. Through an extensive network of artists, writers, curators and institutions, we promote international exchange and collaboration across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
Our showroom in the MuseumsQuartier offers artists the opportunity to showcase their portfolios in a curated context. In addition, EIKON is published quarterly as a bilingual magazine (German/English) and reaches an international specialist audience.
Photography and Media Art
