Since over a decade Sviatchenko has been thinning out his collages in several respects. The transformation of the background into a monochrome contrasting element, creating a tension between the depicted subject and its surroundings, is particularly striking. The surrounding field of colour accentuates the centre of the image. It creates a double framing within the picture frame. […] This aesthetic of omission also creates a sense of disruption of those spatial settings which remain contained within the collage itself, appearing even more condensed due to the indeterminacy of its surroundings. The sharply outlined image construct obtains its internal tension largely from the collision of body fragments and objects.
