The new photographic works of the artist Jeanne Szilit, which seem to oscillate between film and photography, are idyllic, fairytale-like and hazily eerie. Szillit punctures time, tattooes a moment through light, constitues it as suspended time, as its abruptness. She slices pieces of time, deconstructing the flow of an event into a thousand microscopic visual moments. Particles of reality become fragments of fixed memory. Image spaces congeal into lucid visions, into remembered dreamscapes, into pure light and colour spaces, into imaginations of longing, desire, wistfulness and melancholy.

This produces a new emotionality of the visual which goes beyond the atmospheric quality of traditional imagery and puts the viewer in a state of hallucination. Sigmund Freud described the dream work as the process of compression of fragments of experience into new visual structures. Jeanne Szilit is not only aware of this, but also employs it as an essential visual strategy: “As a photographer, I am interested in capturing a moment and revealing the open, often uncannily open possibility for interpretation.”

What is essential for her is not only the “moment décisif“ (Cartier-Bresson), but also a form of extreme attention regarding emotionally loaded image transformations. There are hardly any definitive images, everything is a provisional expression of the infinite, the open.
