Tina Lechner, born in 1981 in St. Pölten, creates her seemingly futuristic creatures only for the camera: she dresses fragile female bodies in avant-garde, geometrically abstract costumes, equips them with protective prostheses, veils them under rigid armour or expands them by absurdly shaped volumes. Through her reduction of tonal values, simple shapes and surfaces, sculpture emerge by photographic means.
Bodies transform into figurines who cannot conceal their fascination with Oskar Schlemmer’s “Triadic Ballet”. The figures, who develop from humanoids towards cyborgs, also evoke association of science fiction movies or Giorgio de Chiricos’ hybrids between sculpture and human.
It is not a proud army of cyborgs; rather, the bodies withdraw, they turn away and, idiomatically, “give the cold shoulder”. For the artist, the societal exploitation of the female body continues in the present day. Lechner’s work function as a sort of rejection of the so-called “male gaze”.
