Deeply rooted in the landscapes of Finland, Riitta Päiväläinen has, since the late 1990s, developed a body of work in which nature is not a backdrop but a counterpart. The forests, lakes, and wetlands of her homeland shape her visual language as profoundly as the memory of a childhood in which the landscape was experienced as a living world, inhabited by imaginary beings and stories. “Perhaps this is why I see landscape as a mental space,” the artist reflects.
