Artist Talk | June 10, 2026 – starting at 7:30 PM
Anton Kehrer’s cross-border works are the focus of a discussion that art historian and curator Roman Grabner will lead with the artist as part of a diverse evening of events in the MQ Showrooms. In the current EIKON Magazine #132, numerous experts seek and find answers to the question “Where Is Photography Now?”.
The upcoming artist talk also builds on these considerations and Kehrer’s extensive portfolio presentation: Based on Anton Kehrer’s work, its origins will be discussed, as well as current perspectives in artistic photography.
Anton Kehrer, born in Linz in 1968, has been developing his artistic practice consistently and intensively for about thirty years, engaging with the phenomena of color, light, and their artistic representations. His methodical approach yields works of sovereign, independent expressive power. He appears as a solitary figure. His works are found in public spaces and serve as focal points in public and private collections. In number and ambition, they mark an exclusive, selective circle. Kehrer’s work draws from several important roots.
Anton Kehrer’s work establishes its presence through the dissolution of strict boundaries between photography, painting, graphics, and sculpture.
Since 1990, his oeuvre has developed continuously and cohesively as a growing body of work. “I don’t have independent series or separable collections,” says Kehrer, but rather precisely configured emanations of his fundamental ideas.
Three starting points of his works are distinctive: First, light sources in public, urban spaces. Second, light art works by other artists. Third, studio photographs using colored glass plates. One could also speak of site-specificity, historical reference, and self-referentiality.
The current exhibition at EIKON Schauraum in MuseumsQuartier Vienna presents works from the Artificial Horizons series as well as graphite works by the artist. EIKON Magazine #132 features an extensive portfolio presentation of Anton Kehrer.
