Vienna has always had a kind of bridging function between East and West, for example during the Cold War. Questions of this kind also interest us because we are strongly committed to enrolling artists into a global history of art.

EDITORIAL

Dear Readers!

The editorial usually refers to the focus of the current issue—in this case to Kontakt’s commitment to making Eastern European art visible, which is why EIKON is paying special tribute to this institution’s anniversary with “In Focus: 20 Years of Kontakt.” In the light of recent developments, namely my resignation as editor-in-chief and artistic director after more than a decade (and almost fifteen years of employment at EIKON altogether), I would like to depart from past practice and instead thank the numerous people who have accompanied me for so long and whose expertise, esprit, and trust have allowed the various fields of activity surrounding this magazine to grow steadily (please excuse the fact that only a selection can be mentioned here): Thanks to my team (especially my colleagues Pia Draskovits and Magdalena Twaroch for their excellent and long-standing collaboration); Dianus Peka, who has been responsible for the resourceful editing of EIKON under the same pseudonym since issue #50; Gérard A. Goodrow and Nelson Wattie for the many eloquent translations; Julia Juriga-Lamut and Marion Mayr (GRAFIKUM) for the careful design of the last issues; Hannes Fauland of the Gerin printing company, who has been a reliable production partner at all (occasionally inauspicious) times; the international advisory board and all the authors and artists who have continuously enriched my daily work. I would also like to thank all our cooperation partners, collectors, and sponsors (especially Ursula Blickle, Andra Spallart, and die Angewandte), and of course the public funding bodies, without whose support a project like EIKON would simply not have been possible. The encounters with artists and their galleries that I had in the course of exhibitions and the Edition EIKON, as well as in the context of special publications and at festivals, biennials, and art fairs, were also invaluable to me. Finally, the many subscribers and loyal readers of this magazine should not go unmentioned.
Thank you all very much for this exciting and incredibly inspiring time!
